The number of chief executive officer changes remained flat in May, as 103 executives announced their departures. That is the exact same number of CEO departures recorded in April, according to the latest report on CEO turnover released Wednesday by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
The 103 CEO changes last month represent an 18 percent decline from the 125 in May 2010. So far this year, a total of 493 CEO departures have been recorded, 13 percent fewer than the 566 CEO exits announced in the first five months of 2010.
Health care saw the heaviest CEO turnover in May with 16 changes, which brings the year-to-date total for the sector to 71 announced departures, more than any other sector.
The second-ranked government and non-profit sector has seen 62 CEO changes so far this year, including 13 in May. Eleven CEOs in financial sector announced their departures, bringing the five-month total for the sector to 53.
