Could the second consecutive month of increased retail sales bode well for holiday hiring? With October quickly approaching, retailers are assessing their need for extra workers during the holiday sales season. Last year, retail payrolls grew by 501,400 workers in October, November and December. That was a 16 percent increase from 2008, when retailers added only 384,300 extra holiday helpers. As this holiday season approaches, the economy is showing signs of recovery, but it remains fragile. Retail sales increased 0.3 percent in July and 0.4 percent in August, but some retailers remain less than optimistic heading into the final quarter of the year. What can job seekers do to increase their chances of finding a holiday job? Outside of retail, what opportunities might exist for holiday job seekers?
Challenger, Gray & Christmas will release its annual holiday retail hiring outlook on Monday, September 20 at 8:00 A.M. ET.
