40,010 Job Cuts in August, Again Led by Tech Sector

 

Planned job cuts announced by US-based employers totaled 40,010 in August, a 15 percent decline from the 46,887 planned layoffs reported in July, according to the report released Thursday by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

The August total was 21 percent lower than the same month a year ago, when 50,462 job cuts were announced.  This marks just the fourth time this year that the monthly total was lower than the comparable period a year ago.

105 CEOs Out in July, Virtually Unchanged From 103 in June

The pace of turnover among the nation’s chief executive officers was virtually unchanged in July, as 105 CEOs announced their departures during the month, according to a report issued Wednesday by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

The July total was up 1.9 percent from the 103 CEO departures recorded in June. It was 17.9 percent lower than the 128 CEO changes announced the same month a year ago.

Teen Jobs Update: Strong Spring May Have Stunted Summer Job Growth

More teenagers found jobs in July compared to a year ago, but it was not enough to lift the overall summer hiring total above last year’s levels, according to an analysis of government employment data by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

Job Cuts Rise in July to 46,887

 

The unexpectedly large layoffs announced by Microsoft helped push July job cuts to the second highest level of the year. In all, U.S.-based employers reported plans to reduce payrolls by 46,887 during the month, according to the report released Thursday by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

103 CEOs Out In June: Slight Uptick in Women CEO Replacements vs Last Year

The pace of turnover among the nation’s chief executive officers rose in June, as 103 CEOs announced their departures during the month, according to a report issued Wednesday by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

The June total was up 5 percent from the 98 CEO departures recorded in May. It was 9.6 percent higher than the 94 CEO changes announced the same month a year ago.

Through the second quarter, US-based companies have announced 661 CEO changes, 9.9 percent more than the 601 CEO exits tracked through the second quarter of 2013.

31,434 June Job Cuts Lowest of the Year

After climbing to a 15-month high in May, planned job cuts announced by U.S.-based employers in June plunged 41 percent to 31,434, the lowest one-month total so far this year. Through the first half of 2014, the pace of job cutting is down 5.0 percent from a year ago, according to the report released Thursday by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

June job cuts were 20 percent lower than the same month a year ago, when employers announced 39,372 job cuts. Job cuts during the month dropped sharply from May, when planned layoffs reached 52,961, which was the largest monthly total since February 2013, when 55,356 job cuts were announced.
